The End is a must-see piece of performance art by Ragnar Kjartansson and David Thor Jonsson that draws on nostalgic representations of nature found in paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, the cover of Supertramp’s Even in the Quietest Moments and other artworks.
To create the half-hour long, five-channel video (synchronized as a single musical arrangement), Kjartansson and Jonsson travelled to five different sites around Banff – in temperatures as low as minus 20ºC – to film themselves playing various instruments. Back in the studio, the pair finessed the soundtrack, evoking the melancholy and loneliness of an explorer in the wilderness, confronted by the question of art’s relationship with nature.
